When families are exploring residential supports under APD, two common options are residential group homes and supported living. Here’s how to compare them.

Group Home (Licensed by APD)
A residential facility licensed by APD under the group‐home regulations. APD
Staffed 24/7 in most cases, depending on level of need.
Offers more structured living and supports.
Your business likely offers this option, so you can highlight your credentials, staffing levels, licensure, monthly monitoring visits by APD. APD
Supported Living
Often an individual lives in their own apartment or home and receives supports according to their individual plan under the waiver.
More independence is built in; staff may come in to assist rather than reside.
May be appropriate for individuals who are more independent and want more autonomy.
Which is right?
If the individual needs higher‐level support, supervision, or behavioral supports, a group home may be the better choice.
If they have more independent skills, want more self‐direction, and can live in a less structured setting, supported living may fit better.
Important: The decision should be guided by the support coordinator and individual’s plan under APD/waiver services.
